About the Coldwater Business Improvement Area
OUR BIA MISSION STATEMENT
To first beautify, then market the Village of Coldwater as a shopping destination. To promote our historical buildings and cultural assets (museums & artists). To grow the local economy by attracting sustainable business, thus creating jobs and increasing economic development. To provide a great food and dining experience. To enhance quality of life for both local, and seasonal residents through a sense of belonging. To expand existing trails and create pedestrian friendly riverside walkways. To strengthen retail business through signature special events. To create pride in community, resulting in clean, friendly streets. To preserve the Village feel, it’s history and character. To be proud to be Canadian.
WHAT DO THE LETTERS B-I-A-STAND FOR?
The letters could more aptly stand for Business in Action, or Business Improvement Association, but the correct answer is Business Improvement Area. Our BIA was initiated by a determined group of business owners, landlords and residents, and formed in the fall of 2009. The way it works is simple: with full co-operation from the Municipality (Severn Township), as set out and legislated by the Province (forming of BIA’s: Ontario Municipal Act), all the commercial properties, in a pre-determined geographical area, are taxed a proportionately small amount. Then the monies collected (managed by the Township) are re-directed to a Board of elected Business Owners and/or Representatives (Directors) and the funds are used primarily for Mainstreet Revitalization. The Board follows a nomination process and the term is concurrent with the Municipal Election Term (4 Years). Each year a budget is prepared and then submitted to Council for approval. Meetings are monthly, with an agenda going out a week prior.
If you are a member of the Coldwater BIA (your business falls within our area boundaries) please make sure you are on our email contact list and please participate in discussions and elections (2014) at our Annual General Meeting (held in November). Our monthly meetings (third Monday of the month) are held upstairs at the Coldwater Community Centre, 6:00 pm and attendance is welcome. The three (3) Main areas of our BIA mandate are: (1) Beautification, (2) Marketing & Advertising and (3) Special Events & Promotions. We also have a Capital Fund that is saved for future projects. Each of these groups has a Committee Chair and Committee Members consisting of Board Members, Shop Owners and Community volunteers. If you would like to become a volunteer and join a committee we would LOVE to have you. “The work is plenty and the labour is few”…please call or send an email and we will direct you to the time and place of the specific committee meeting of your choice.
